Riva Surya is a new hotel set right on the river just north of the Grand Palace area, in the center of old Bangkok. The 68-room hotel bills itself as a five-star property, and it certainly is rather posh at first glance, but I seriously doubt it can live up to the standards set by Bangkok’s well-established POSH properties. Still, with high season published rates starting at around $100 you might find it good value for money, especially for a riverside location.
The hotel is almost right next to the Pinklao Bridge, a very short walk down the river or Phra Arthit Road from the Phra Arthit pier for the express boat service. It is therefore very close to Khaosan Road, which might not be to everyone’s liking, but it does ensure there are plenty of good places to eat nearby. The hotel is, as you can imagine, very easy to get to by boat, but a taxi in rush hour may be problematic. There is a small pier near the hotel, but unlike other five-star riverside hotels, it appears that they don’t operate any of their own boats.
The hotel has a coffee shop, pool, fitness center and bar. There is wi-fi Internet available throughout the hotel, but it’s not free. I didn’t get to see a room. On arriving at the hotel, I was told they were showing a room and they asked me to wait. More than half an hour later I got tired of waiting and left. This was after making three attempts to contact them to make an appointment, one of which was face-to-face at a travel show.
