Abandoned Olympic Pool Complex Given my penchant for ancient ruins, it's no surprise that I'm also fascinated by more modern abandoned places. Near the top of the hill that separates Machico from the airport, in the town of Agua de Pena, there's an abandoned swimming pool complex with an Olympic sized pool complete with diving towers.
Spooky House The area where I'm staying west of central Funchal is very new, full of modern hotels and apartment blocks. But, as in almost any neighborhood around the world, there's always that one house. This place is probably close to 100 years old.
Khoo Kongsi The Khoo Kongsi (Khoo clan house) is one of the largests clan and congregation houses in Georgetown, Penang. Unlike some of the more well-known clan houses, this one is somewhat hidden down a small alley that opens up into a huge courtyard.
Wat Ratchabophit Window Wat Ratchabophit is one of many under-the-rader temples in Bangkok. It's very close to the Grand Palace and Wat Po but is much less visited. In addition to the uniquely styled temple compound, there's an adjoining graveyard housing the columbariums of many minor royals.
Sanam Chan Palace Just west of Bangkok in Nakohn Phathom is the rather whimsical Sanam Chan palace. Built in the early twentieth century, the palace has a very European layout but some buildings show more Thai incluence than others. This doorway is in the Vajariromaya Residence reception room.

Hotel Majapahit The Hotel Majapahit in Surabaya is one of the less known classic hotels around Southeast Asia. It was built in 1910 by the the Sarkies Brothers, who built Raffles in Singapore and the Eastern & Oriental in Penang. The lobby building which has this window was built in 1930, which is why it reflects a heave art deco design.
Portland Web Window Portland is full of interesting architecture. There are beautiful structures from the last century, charming homes, and even asome quirky structures. On the quirky side is a brick house in the West Hills area with a roof meant to resemble thatch and leaded glass windows with spider web patters.
Vimanmek Mansion Vinamek Mansion in Bangkok is a marvelous attraction that often gets only a quick visit, when it can be worth a whole day to see all the other palace buildings in the compound. One wing of Vimanmek Mansion
Abandoned Building Malta, 2023. The weathered doorway of a tumbling-down building near an old salt pan not far from St Paul's Bay. The door is still intact even though the walls are coming down.
