Hotel Majapahit

The Hotel Majapahit in Surabaya is one of the less known classic hotels around Southeast Asia. It was built in 1910 by the the Sarkies Brothers, who built Raffles in Singapore and the Eastern & Oriental in Penang. The lobby building which has this window was built in 1930, which is why it reflects a heave art deco design.

Prambanan

The Prambanan Complex just outside Yogykarta in central Java is less well-known than the nearby Borobodur Temple, but no less impressive. The towers of the central grouping of the Prambanan Complex

Lotus Lagoon

Candidasa, on Bali, was one of my favorite places on the island. It's developed with several small-ish hotels and lots of restaurants, but not over-run with tourists. This lagoon (a former bay now cut off from the sea) is at the center of the northern area of the town.

Off the Beaten Track Destinations in Southeast Asia

While pundits continue to argue about what the extended travel bans mean in the long term for tourism, I believe it's safe to say that most destinations that were popular before the pandemic will, eventually, be popular again. That may leave some of you in a bit of a quandry: Do you really want to go where there are a lot of people, and therefore a higher risk?

The Top Five Ancient Temples of Southeast Asia

In reviewing my 20 years worth of content and photos for the rebuild of this site, I thought it might be a good idea to summarize my favorites in a single article, to give you some travel inspiration. In this first list, I've selected some of the most memorable historic sites.

Bali Hotels

The main living area of Villa Sasoon in Candi Dasa, Bali. As befits an island where tourism is the main — practically the only — business, Bali has hundreds of luxury hotels, resorts and private villas. Every major destination has its share of POSH places to stay, so the first thing you need to decide is which part of Bali you want to stay in.

Cultural Attractions in Bali

The Kecak dance at Ulu Watu template Bali retains its own unique culture, which is probably similar to that of the other islands in the archipeligo before the Moslem conversions. Curiously, the Balinese language has no word for 'art' or 'artist.
